What is the difference between a HeatSink and a Cpu Cooler?
I was watching a review of a case, and saw that this particular case had a whole in the back for a heatsink, So here are my questions:
1. What is a heatsink, and how does it differ from a cpu cooler (The one that is a fan on the top)
2. Can I run both a heatsink on the bottom and on the top?
3. Would the AMD 965 x4 3.4ghz, need both of them?
A heatsink alone is just the metal part with grooves that is placed on top of the processor with thermal compound to absorb the heat the processor produces. A CPU cooler is just a heatsink with a fan screwed to it to disperse the heat so the other case fans can blow it out. Most people think you need to fan blow out away from the heatsink and processor, when in fact you want the fan blowing down onto the heatsink and processor to efficiently disperse the heat.
Not sure what you mean by using a heatsink on top and bottom. The heatsink or CPU cooler unit sits directly on top of the actual processor so it can absorb the heat. More than likely what you saw was a place in the back for an additional case fan.
Yes, the AMD Phenom II X4 965 should have a very good CPU cooler (heatsink and fan) used with it.
