Cache, the more you can store and send all of the speed of the system interface bandwidth. That being said you will not feel any difference between 16 and 32meg cache. I have 16 meters and the 2x500 of each and every cache buffer 3200 can not tell the difference between 2 RAID arrays, 2x400gb for a hdd dock firewire. I rmicro1 agree, I think you'd better buy a larger drive.
As for the backup. It's all personal, there are built-in tools that make your Windows operating system and backup your stuff, but honestly ,just back up your photos and video and game save files and materials, do not worry about the hard disk dock station fw800/400. Windows often requires a clean install every year or anyway. I usually go through and format and reinstall Windows on the basis of a year just to clean up the file system and all the stuff on my computer. Therefore, the only thing I bother to back up my media stuff and my school work and other similar important things in the game to save the file.
