Protein Shake quesiton?

Hi everyone, I'm an 18 year old rower and I'm going to be starting college in about a month and a half. Recently, I have been increasing my erg workouts and am rowing 25,000+ meters every day (about an hour and a half-two hours of work). My main goal here is losing fat, while maintaining muscle through all of this cardio. I have a question about my protein shake that I have perfected, and it tastes delicious. Would this help me maintain muscle mass while losing fat?

- 1 scoop myofusion chocolate protein powder (190 calories, 25 grams of protein, 11 carbs)
- 1/2 cup unsweetened soy milk
- 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter
- 1% milkfat cottage cheese
- Handful crushed ice.

I'd say that it has roughly around 5-600 calories, and quite a bit of protein. I erged at high intensity for about an hour and a half today, and had one shake in between breakfast and one a few minutes ago (pre-bed meal). Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I hope you are eating lots and lots of fresh veggies at all your meals, and some fruits too. You need real nutrition from real food if you want to see and maintain really good results.

It sounds like you have lots of protein in your shake! But you also have both soy and dairy in it, which are not great for you. I am guessing you are male. Soy is not great for males, especially processed conventional soy, and especially every day! It can mimic estrogen, a female hormone. And dairy is not great for anyone. Both dairy and soy can really mess up your hormones, and make you plump up. They can also really affect your skin.

Both my boyfriend and I lost a lot of puffiness when we stopped consuming dairy. I'm not lactose intolerant at all, but I really felt a huge difference anyway. And before that, we were using only organic dairy, which has less hormones and weird stuff than conventional.

Try cutting out dairy and soy and replacing them with other sources of protein and you will probably see and feel a difference almost immediately!

I would recommend a non-soy, non-dairy protein powder. Vega naturals has great ones with flavors. There are also flavored hemp and rice protein powders. Check a natural foods store for them, or shop the supplements section at Whole Foods, or order online.

I use plain, unflavored rice or hemp protein. And I blend it up in green smoothies - mostly veggies, with a little fruit, and enough water to make the blender go. Tons of protein from both the powder and, believe it or not, the veggies too! Plus I get electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals. And a natural energy boost from all the chlorophyll.

If you don't want a smoothie (or savory green soup - just protein and veggies!) with your protein powder later in the day, you can always make a chocolate shake like you're doing but with non-dairy, non-soy ingredients; or you can mix the powder with just a little water or almond milk and plenty of nut butter to make it puddingy. I like to mix rice protein with a little water and some almond butter, plus a pinch of sea salt and cayenne, then dip celery stalks in it. It's also great with a mashed banana and some cinnamon stirred in!

Good luck, and have a great time in college! It sounds like you are very dedicated to your sport and that is admirable! I rowed my first year in college and loved it! But I'm too tall to be a coxswain and too little to be much of a rower so I had no chance at varsity.
