Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan: Which country is better to travel to?
I'm interested in traveling to Central Asia (silk road, the trace of Muslim traders, stuff like that...)
Which country is best to travel to in terms of these qualities?
a) safety (less violent crimes, theft and mugging, rare chances of terrorism & civil war stuff)
b) hygiene (clean public bathrooms, hotels, drinkable water)
c) magnificent architecture and historical sites
d) beautiful nature and exotic scenery
e) tourist-friendly (many English speaking local people, tour guides and lots of signs in English)
My candidates are Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
You may choose the one best country or rank all of them in order
Turkmenistan - extremely safe (like any strict dictatorship), many doubts about services though. Highly recommended if you are curious about social life during Stalin's period and don't have a time machine.
Uzbekistan - culturally very rich country, with a lot of magnificent places to visit but due to ethnic and political-religious tensions is quite troublesome. Forget about hygiene while there;
Tajikistan - ethnic and linguistic brother of Iran. Breathtaking view of the mountains, ancient history, pit-stop for drug traffickers from Afghanistan, recent violent political past;
Kazakhstan - the most europeanised country of all the four. Decent service, English-speaking youth, not too much to see except for very warm people;
Remember that if you are a guest in these countries you'll have the best what the locals have. It is in Central Asian cultural traditions to treat a guest as a god.
